Pemphigus is an autoimmune skin disorder with blistering, involving the skin and mucous membranes. It occurs because our immune system attacks connecting proteins that keep skin cells together. The result is the loosening of skin cells.Â
Pemphigus is more common in India than in Western countries, though exact statistical figures are unavailable. The condition mostly affects people between ages of 30 and 60 years but may occur at any age.Â
The symptoms include blistering of the skin, scalp, and mucous membranes. The blisters are typically fragile and break easily, which can leave painful erosions. Diagnosis is generally done by clinical examination, skin biopsy, and blood tests. The most important thing in the treatment is the early diagnosis.Â
While pemphigus is a chronic disease, various available treatments for it include corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and biologicals. Many patients show significant improvement in symptoms after treatment improving their quality of life.
